The first of the CNA insurance companies-Continental Casualty Company-opened its doors for business in 1897. Now we are in our third century of operation, taking it as our challenge to build upon the legacy of the past for a stronger future.

We started our primary life insurance company-Continental Assurance Company-in 1911. Our acquisitions of National Fire and The American Casualty Company added the N and the A to our already-existing C, and we became CNA officially in the late 1960’s.

We are committed to remaining focused on our core businesses of insurance and insurance services. We are committed to remaining financially strong and stable, so that we will be here to keep our promises to you, no matter how many years in the future those promises must be kept.

The numbers speak for themselves. Our life insurance companies had capital and surplus of $1.2 billion and assets of $12.7 billion as of June 30,1999. The CNA life insurance companies are among the top 2% of life insurers in the U.S., with premiums of $4 billion for the first 12 months ending December 31,1998.
